How to Better Protect Art and Photos from Fading

Once you’ve found a piece of artwork or photography you love, naturally you want to keep it looking its best. While some changes can occur over time, a few simple precautions can help protect art and photos from unnecessary fading and damage.

How to Better Protect Art and Photos from Fading

  • Keep It Out of Direct Sunlight

Light is one of the biggest concerns when displaying artwork and photography. Direct sunlight can cause colours and images to fade over time, and damage is permanent.

Whenever possible, avoid hanging artwork directly opposite a sunny window or in a location where strong sunlight falls on it for extended periods.

Blinds, curtains and shades can help reduce exposure in particularly sunny rooms.

  • Consider UV-Protective Glazing

If you’re having a print professionally framed, ask about glass or acrylic that filters ultraviolet (UV) light.

You can further protect art and photos in bright rooms by using UV-protective glazing. However, it doesn’t make a print completely immune to fading, so it’s still wise to avoid prolonged direct sunlight.

  • Watch Heat and Humidity

Where you hang artwork matters for reasons other than light.

Areas with high humidity or frequent temperature changes aren’t ideal for prints and artwork. Bathrooms, damp basements and locations directly above fireplaces or heating vents may expose artwork to unnecessary fluctuations in moisture and temperature.

Choose a relatively stable environment whenever possible.

  • Handle Prints Carefully

If you’re handling an unframed photograph or print, make sure your hands are clean and dry, and try to hold it by the edges.

Avoid touching the printed surface unless you have to, as oils and dirt from your hands can transfer to the image.

  • Use Good-Quality Framing Materials

If a piece is particularly important to you, talk to your framer about good-quality mats, backing materials and framing options designed to protect artwork.

Professional framing may cost a little more, but it can be worthwhile for a treasured piece.

Enjoy Your Artwork

Artwork is meant to be seen and enjoyed. You don’t need to hide it away to protect it.

Choose its location carefully, avoid prolonged direct sunlight and handle it with care to protect your art and photos, and keep them looking beautiful for years to come.
